چکیده

This paper presents a prosodic analysis of a corpus of 12 tales, read by one male speaker. The work is part of a project which aims at providing storytelling capacities to a humanoid robot. One main point is to improve text-to-speech synthesis expressivity according to a semi-automatic analysis of a given tale. Automatic tagging and prosodic stylization were applied to the corpus. The extracted parameters are described and analyzed according to relevant elements of the tales’ structure. The results show that changes of pitch and intensity registers, use of glide tones or devoicing are relevant to impersonate prototypical characters and to modify expressivity according to the different structural parts of each tale. These prosodic results will contribute to enhance the expressivity of a non-uniform-unit textto-speech synthesizer.

Rhythmic Patterns and Literary Genres in Synthesized Speech

In this paper, the rhythmic patterns observed in natural and synthesized speech are compared for three literary forms (rhymes, poems, and fairy tales). The aim of the comparison is to evaluate how rhythm could be improved in synthesized speech, which could allow adapting it to specific styles or genres. The study is based on the analysis of a corpus of six rhymes, four poems and two extracts fr...

Text and Speech Corpora for Text-To-Speech Synthesis of Tales

Text and speech corpora for training a tale telling robot have been designed, recorded and annotated. The aim of these corpora is to study expressive storytelling behaviour, and to help in designing expressive prosodic and co-verbal variations for the artificial storyteller). A set of 89 children tales in French serves as a basis for this work. The tales annotation principles and scheme are des...

Towards the adaptation of prosodic models for expressive text-to-speech synthesis

This paper presents a preliminary study whose main aim is to characterize four distinct speaking styles according to a limited set of prosodic features, including the length of prosodic phrases (AP and IP), the distribution of stressed syllables, pitch register span, the duration of silent pauses, etc. The analysis was performed using semi-automatic procedures on a corpus consisting of 30 minut...

Modelling pause duration as a function of contextual length

Effects of contextual length are known to affect pause durations in neutral speech. The present study investigates these effects on an expressive corpus of read tales in French. Computational models of intra-sentence, and inter-sentence pause durations, as functions of contextual lengths are proposed. These models are aimed at improving Text-To-Speech synthesis systems, and provide clues for sy...

Fairy Tales and ESL Texts: An Analysis of Linguistic Features Using the Gramulator

This chapter describes a study that investigates the potential value of using traditional fairy tales as reading material for English language learners (ELL). Using the computational textual analysis software, the Gramulator, the authors analyzed the linguistic features of fairy tales relative to a corpus of ELL reading material and a corpus of baseline educational texts for native English spea...
